Story Synopsis:
"The Rose" is the story of a rock superstar of the 1960s as portrayed by Bette Midler in her remarkable film debut. Her stage performance is powerful as she speaks to her generation with fearlessness and vitality, but away from the spotlight she is despondent and relies on alcohol to keep pace with the demanding concert schedule. The controlling force behind her is her manager (Bates), whose grip on Rose keeps her going back on stage. When Rose falls for Dyer (Forrest), he tries to take her away from the public life and she is forced to make her fateful decision. (Gary Reber)
DVD Picture:
The anamorphically enhanced 1.85:1 DVD exhibits a gritty picture that looks dated, with faded, slightly weak colors. Bright exteriors are often hazy and blown out. The picture is soft overall, lacking fine details and natural dimension and definition. Some of the performance footage Contrast seems a bit low with this picture that is already dim in nature. The source element is revealing of dirt and film grain, that adds almost complementary texture to the picture, though it may be considered bothersome by some viewers. Edge enhancement and pixelization are limited. (Suzanne Hodges)
