Footloose 4K Ultra HD SteelBook

In "Footloose," Ren MacCormack (Kevin Bacon) is a city kid translated to the small town of Bomont where dancing has been outlawed. Ren goes up against Bomont's reverend (Dennis Quaid) to challenge the ban with the help of the minister's daughter (Julianne Hough), and in the process reminds the entire town that dancing is more than youthful exuberance—it's a celebration of life. The 1.85:1 2160p HEVC/H.265 4K Ultra HD Dolby Vision/HDR10 picture, reviewed on a VIZIO Quantum X P85QX-JI UHD/HDR display, was photographed on Eastman film stock using the Panavision Panaflex cameras and sourced from a 4K Digital Intermediate. Image quality is faultless. The color palette is densely saturated with rich and vivid hues that pop off the screen. The palette is nicely balanced and exhibits fine hues shadings. Blues, greens, reds, yellows and earth tones exhibit natural vibrancy. The thin grain layer imparts a cinematic presence, yet the imagery is sharp and clear throughout. Flesh tones are rendered perfectly natural with nuanced tonal differences. HDR contrast is well balanced with deep, solid blacks and revealing shadow delineation. White levels appear natural. Resolution reveals fine detail throughout, especially with respect to closeups of facial features, hair, clothing, and object texture. Standouts are the texture of blue jeans and cowboy hats, as well as dirt on roads foliage vehicle paint and building façades. This is an excellent visual presentation, with color density that is engaging and sure to please. This is the definitely the new reference for this classic. (Gary Reber)

The DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1-channel is packed with dynamic energy, enhanced with deep and solid .1 LFE energy down to sub-25 Hz frequencies. The music is enhanced with a solid bass foundation. Bass excels outside of music, as well. Stomping dancers, tractor engine rumblings and crashes deliver effective bass elevation. The racing sequence sound effects are nicely directionalized with school busses zooming throughout the soundfield. Atmospherics sound natural and realistic. The proceedings consistently sound clean and dialogue is always intelligible and natural sounding. Of course, the music is a prime element and the sonics do not disappoint. The sound is dynamic and immersively enveloping, with a wide and deep soundstage that extends aggressively into the surrounds. Panning of atmospherics and sound effects is effective to enhance the overall holosonic® character. This is a well-crafted soundtrack that delivers punchy sonics and energized dynamics that are engaging. (Gary Reber)
